So Ben Benaud pads up for his first Test Match at a much earlier stage than anyone thought possible.
In cricket, as in life, there are examples of individuals and teams facing seemingly insurmountable odds and managing to pull through. We are big believers that with the right preparation, application and support, you put yourself in a position where you are best placed to take on any bowling, even if on a sticky wicket, against an aggressive pace attack with a swinging ball.
Ben already has a cult following of supporters from around the globe willing him on. Strong contributions from the English Barmy Army, Australian Fanatics and Red, White and Blue fans (not sure what US cricket supporters are called - if they have any at all).
The love and devotion of his Mum, Dad and two beautiful sisters together with your extended family and friends provide him with a great base. Combine that with a Medical team that sounds like they would rival the Australian cricket team in terms of superiority in their field, and the ingredients for a successful innings are really starting to take shape.
I can hear in my head the commentary of Richie Benaud in his iconic monotone - "Game on for this marvelous young fellow, Ben Watters".
It is in fact more difficult supporting from the stands when someone you love is in the heat of battle and you want to do all you can to help. We all feel a little helpless but we each need our role and need to perform that in the best way possible to give Benny what he needs to take this on.
It is difficult for anyone to know how to respond in these times and I find myself drawn between so many emotions and thoughts on what to do and what to say as they all seem so inadequate.
The website is a revelation and inspiration to us all. You have touched so many people’s lives in such a positive and uplifting way. I draw inspiration from your incredible strength you have had to call on and the honesty and humor that is so aptly displayed in the journal. The video of Ben screaming support for the gridiron, thoughts of him swearing in the library or running around the house with poo in hand, bring such positive thoughts.
Our hearts hang heavy as we still try and come to terms with the news and you remain forefront in our thoughts. Fate still has a hand to play so focus on the controllable, take care of yourselves and remain as positive as you can.
Lots of Love
